The City of Schertz is seeking a dedicated professional to oversee the Water/Wastewater Department. This role involves strategic planning, organization, and management of all water and wastewater operations. The Superintendent will provide expert guidance to city management and engage regularly with various governmental agencies, city officials, and the public, necessitating a high degree of diplomacy and tact.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs and coordinates all activities related to public works in water and wastewater, establishing and implementing objectives, policies, and operational standards that align with the City’s mission and values.
  • Engages in the recruitment and selection process, fostering employee development, conducting performance evaluations, and making recommendations regarding personnel actions.
  • Oversees budget preparation for the Water/Wastewater divisions, ensuring alignment with approved financial plans and monitoring expenditures.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development to stay current with public works practices.
  • Addresses public inquiries and complaints regarding the condition of water and wastewater facilities.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Public Works to ensure that all personnel receive necessary training to maintain operational proficiency.
  • Conducts briefings on departmental activities for city staff and stakeholders.
  • Prepares and reviews various reports detailing departmental activities and performance.
  • Performs additional duties as necessary to support the effective operation of the city as directed by the Director of Public Works.
  • Monitors construction projects, ensuring compliance with city codes and regulations during the development and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities.
  • Familiarizes with relevant city codes, regulations, and standards related to water and wastewater operations.
  • Encourages a culture of safety and training among department personnel.
  • Undertakes other job-related responsibilities as required.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent; a Bachelor's degree is strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in water, sewer, and stormwater operations, with a minimum of three years in a supervisory or management role within a public works setting.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Required to obtain a Class B Water Operator License and a Class III Wastewater Collection Operator License within the first year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of construction practices and materials relevant to public works water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Proficient in understanding construction and maintenance practices for related facilities, including the ability to interpret technical plans and specifications.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite is essential.
