Personal Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Personal Support Specialist provides essential services to individuals within their residences and communities who require assistance due to aging, illness, disability, or other conditions. This role encompasses personal care tasks, which may include aiding with daily living activities, household chores, meal preparation, transportation, companionship, and respite care. Personal Support Specialists are committed to delivering services in a compassionate and respectful manner, adhering to the relevant agency guidelines and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist clients with daily living activities and personal care, including:
- bathing - grooming - mobility assistance
- oral hygiene - dressing - physical exercise
- hair grooming - feeding - toileting
- nail care - positioning - medication reminders
- skin care - transferring - monitoring vital signs - Ensure the safety and security of clients by overseeing their home environment.
- Provide guidance in meal planning and preparation, as well as routine housekeeping tasks such as changing linens, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, kitchen and bathroom cleaning, and laundry.
- Offer companionship through social interaction, conversation, emotional support, and encouragement of mentally stimulating activities.
- Deliver respite care for families in alignment with established care plans.
- Assist with essential errands and shopping, which may involve managing the client's finances in accordance with the care plan and under supervision.
- Support clients in adhering to prescribed dietary plans and maintaining dietary requirements as directed by healthcare professionals.
- Accompany clients to medical appointments, errands, shopping, and recreational activities as outlined in the care plan.
- Facilitate communication for clients by composing or typing correspondence or researching information on their behalf.
- Engage in the Care Team by providing feedback and suggestions.
- Ensure that services are delivered in compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
- Monitor and manage supplies and resources effectively.
- Evaluate the program and provide recommendations as necessary.
- Adhere to the established care plan.
- Execute duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Observe clients and their surroundings, reporting any unsafe conditions to the Supervisor.
- Monitor clients for behavioral, physical, or cognitive changes and report these to the Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, observations, and hours of service provided.
- Participate in orientation, training sessions, and staff meetings.
- Foster constructive and cooperative relationships with colleagues and clients.
- Make informed decisions and solve problems effectively.
- Communicate clearly with Supervisors and team members.
- Gather and interpret information from relevant sources.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Essential Knowledge:
- Understanding of personal care and home management practices.
- Familiarity with client service principles, including needs assessment, quality standards, and client satisfaction evaluation.
- Proficiency in the English language.
- Knowledge of emergency first aid and CPR techniques.
- Understanding of clerical processes such as record-keeping and form completion.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Good physical and mental health.
- Physical capability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and see.
- Mental resilience to manage stress effectively.
- Physical and mental capability to operate a vehicle.
Qualifications:
- Certified Caregiver.
- Valid driver's license.
- Appropriate vehicle insurance coverage.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Negative TB test.
- Fingerprint clearance card.
Training and Experience:
- Ongoing education.
- On-the-job training for new responsibilities.
