Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Specialist to join our team at the University of Virginia Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing and assisting with laboratory management and experimental procedures in Dr. Todd Stukenberg's laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory experiments, including cell culture, molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and protein purification.
  • Coordinate and participate in routine technical duties, providing assistance to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, and staff.
  • Order supplies and equipment for the lab and maintain an organized system of operation.
  • Participate in weekly group meetings and assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • Facilitate collaborations with other laboratories and clinicians to obtain clinical samples.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • For Laboratory Specialist Intermediate: Bachelor's degree, 6 years of experience, or Master's degree may substitute for required experience.
  • For Laboratory Specialist Senior: Bachelor's degree, 9 years of experience, or Master's degree and 4 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous research experience in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or data analysis.
Working Conditions

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation are also required.
