Job Summary

The Texas Juvenile Justice Department is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Juvenile Correctional Officer to join our team. As a key member of our correctional staff, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a juvenile residential facility, facilitating youth rehabilitation, and providing supervision and direct care to youth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily operations of a juvenile residential facility, ensuring a safe and secure environment for youth and staff.
  • Facilitate youth rehabilitation, supervision, and coaching to promote personal development and adherence to individualized treatment plans.
  • Provide direct care and supervision to youth, including planning, assigning, and supervising the work of other correctional officers.
  • Support and mentor other correctional officers to teach appropriate methods and positive ways to work with youth.
  • Work with youth to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma, and to develop socially acceptable responses and approaches.
  • Use good judgment in determining when safety is at risk and higher levels of intervention are required.
  • Help youth to identify their responses to stress, fear, and other triggers, and work with them to learn ways to increase emotional self-regulation skills.
  • Practice and model appropriate self-regulation skills, and be able to remain calm during times of stress and crisis.
  • Help correctional officers identify and utilize their own self-regulation skills, so they are equipped to co-regulate youth.
  • Gain a basic knowledge of each youth's treatment plan and provide support in learning the skills needed to meet those goals.
  • Coach youth on how to resolve conflict with other youth and staff, as appropriate.
  • Participate in the Youth Service Team and provide input into each youth's treatment plan.
  • Provide for a predictable schedule for youth, transparent to them, and provide warnings and prompts for all movements and transitions.
  • Implement and monitor youth activities, programs, and behaviors on an individual and group basis, to ensure healthy youth engagement and provide appropriate role modeling.
  • Observe and keep staff informed daily of significant behavioral and treatment-related conditions and events known about a youth and/or the group.
  • Provide services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting, with a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs.
  • Maintain security in buildings, grounds, and other posts, and intervene during emergencies or altercations to prevent escapes and protect the safety of all youth.
  • Conduct searches for contraband and health/safety hazards, and perform room, property, pat, and strip searches of youth as required.
  • Supervise assigned youth during all of their daily activities, including on the dorm, at school, during meals, and other activities.
  • Manage all movements between activities, conduct periodic headcounts, ensure youth engage in required activities, and transfer and transport youth, on foot, in vehicles, and other forms of transportation.
  • Respond appropriately to youth grievances.
  • Maintain privacy and follow all policies, regulations, and laws in regards to youth records.
  • Complete and maintain required records, files, and forms in a timely and accurate way.
  • Monitor outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and take action to address identified disparities.
  • Perform a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 23 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of full-time wage earning experience supervising or providing rehabilitation/treatment services to youth or adults in a treatment program, correctional program, or a residential setting.
  • Preferred: College degree or coursework.
  • Experience and Education Substitutions: Completed course hours of undergraduate study may substitute for up to four years of experience on a basis of 30 course hours for one year of experience.
  • Pro-rated part-time experience may satisfy the experience requirement.
