SUNY Downstate Medical Center is seeking a part-time Nursing Station Clerk I, Med/Surgery (Evenings) to join our team. As a key member of our nursing department, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of administrative tasks in a fast-paced clinical setting.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Registration:
- Greet patients and check them into the computer system.
- Verify patient demographic and financial information to ensure accurate billing.
- Generate paperwork and review pertinent information with patients.
- Notify nursing personnel or providers of patient arrival.
- Orient patients and families to the unit and provide general information about the room, unit, and hospital.
- Appointment Scheduling:
- Obtain patient information for demographics, referrals, insurance, and authorization.
- Schedule appointments per specialty practices and obtain previous medical records as needed.
- Answering Phones and Taking Messages:
- Communicate patient problems and needs to the appropriate representative.
- Patient Checkout/Discharge:
- Make referral and/or return appointments in the computer system.
- Obtain insurance authorization for visits and tests on behalf of patients.
- Enter lab and radiology procedure requests into the computer system.
- Provide patient escort as needed.
- Assist in collecting insurance co-pays.
- Encounter Ticket Management:
- Ensure that encounter tickets are completed accurately and charges are submitted in a timely manner.
- Track missing charges when necessary.
- General Clerical Support:
- Pick up and deliver supplies to the corresponding unit.
- Check par levels of supplies, order and receive clerical supplies and equipment, and stock supplies into the computerized stocking system and supply closets.
- Perform data entry to include meeting notes, assignment sheets, forms, and brief reports.
- Accurately collect and record statistical data on patient activity.
- Prepare routine reports or assist in the preparation of reports by gathering data, tabulating results, and preparing simple charts.
- Check and record refrigerator temperatures in daily logs.
- Sort and distribute mail, keep appropriate records, and redirect mail as necessary.
- Serve as a member of various committees.
- Orient new staff to the locations of supplies and procedure books.
- 1 year of full-time clerical, secretarial, or patient care experience in a healthcare setting.
- Promotion: 1 year of permanent service in a title allocated to Grade 5 or higher and satisfactory completion of a six-month traineeship.
- Variable days, 3:30 pm to 12:00 am (part-time evenings).
- SG-7 salary grade/rank.
- As per civil service guidelines.
