Palo Alto, California, United States Current Job Openings Full time

PsiQuantum is dedicated to pioneering the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer, aiming to address today's most challenging computational problems and deliver groundbreaking outcomes. Achieving this vision requires the development of approximately 1 million qubits and significant scaling in size.

Quantum computing is anticipated to unlock solutions for tasks that are currently beyond reach. By leveraging the principles of quantum physics, these computers can offer exponential performance enhancements over even the most advanced conventional supercomputers, promising remarkable advancements across diverse fields such as climate science, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials innovation, and more.

PsiQuantum is uniquely equipped to fulfill the potential of quantum computing. Our architecture is founded on photonics, enabling us to manufacture components using high-volume semiconductor processes that have been successfully utilized in telecommunications and data centers for years. Since photons are not affected by heat, we can utilize existing cryogenic cooling systems that have been operational at facilities like Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) since 2018. Additionally, photons, being light, can seamlessly transition between subsystems using standard fiber connectivity, eliminating the need for transduction.

Our team is engaged in comprehensive quantum computing efforts, spanning quantum architecture, photonic chip production, advanced opto-electronic packaging, hardware systems design, quantum algorithms, software tools, and cryogenic cooling. We are a driven and collaborative group united by a singular mission: to construct the world's first Fault Tolerant Quantum Computer as swiftly as possible.

Job Overview:

The cutting-edge photonic technology being developed at PsiQuantum is breaking new ground in quantum optics, presenting unprecedented opportunities. This endeavor necessitates innovative approaches to comprehend the performance of intricate quantum optical systems and guide us toward fault-tolerant quantum computation. We seek a dynamic and motivated research engineer or physicist responsible for designing and executing experiments on complex quantum systems. The ideal candidate will collaborate across various disciplines, including quantum information, optics, electronics, cryogenics, and software, to develop and validate quantum systems. The successful candidate will work closely with PsiQuantum's engineering teams to ensure that integrated system tests are conducted efficiently by defining test requirements and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute tests to produce nonclassical optical data and validate the performance of optical quantum computer systems.
  • Collaborate with system design and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) teams to establish, define, and document validation objectives, ensuring system design aligns with validation needs.
  • Create clear and quantitative metrics for assessing quantum performance.
  • Develop and validate methods for calibration, self-testing, and control of novel quantum photonic systems, including requirements for software and electronics teams to implement procedures and manage data.
  • Analyze, process, and present experimental data, collaborating with engineering teams to ensure data informs engineering models for system performance.
  • Troubleshoot complex systems and work with engineering teams to conduct failure analysis and resolve design or manufacturing challenges as necessary.
  • Effectively communicate validation results to internal stakeholders and assist in guiding corrective actions.
Qualifications:
  • M.S. degree (Ph.D. preferred) or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, experimental Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Proven ability to design and execute complex experiments or engineering tests in a collaborative environment.
  • Extensive technical knowledge with the capability to delve deeply into required technical areas of our systems, including hardware, software, controls, precision measurement, and photonics.
  • Experience in software development for instrumentation, controls, and testing equipment (Python preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience with some or all of the following is preferred:
    • Quantum optics, optics, integrated optics, silicon photonics
    • Quantum state tomography
    • Quantum information theory
    • Cryogenic systems
    • Mixed-signal, analog, RF electronics design and testing
    • Electro-optical device design and testing
  • Proven team player with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments, locations, and time zones.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and take ownership of delivering validation objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying information effectively to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and technical experts.
  • Demonstrated interest in PsiQuantum's mission and vision for quantum computing, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment aligned with PsiQuantum's values of communication, collaboration, respect, results, and challenge.
