Crown's Food Division is the world's largest manufacturer of food cans. Our comprehensive range of food packaging serves various markets, including fruit, vegetables, dairy, fish, meat, ready meals, pet food, infant milk powder, and other dry food products. We offer a wide selection of food cans, from round to bowl-shaped cans, and are committed to excellence in all our products.

Job Summary

The Tool & Die Maker serves a critical function in the operation and maintenance of high-speed manufacturing equipment at our Dubuque, Iowa manufacturing location. This role is responsible for performing a range of tasks, including:

  • Repairing and maintaining end and tongue dies, including the manufacture of replacement parts as needed
  • Using precision measuring instruments to assemble, fit, align, and adjust parts to exact tolerances
  • Managing tooling inventories, setting up tool packs, measuring precision tolerances, and working with assembly set-ups
  • Studying specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts
  • Setting up and operating machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, and other equipment, to machine parts
  • Interacting closely with the operations team to plan, troubleshoot, and analyze production and equipment issues and concerns, and developing solutions
  • Conducting quality checks on products to meet customer requirements
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Five to ten years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Thorough knowledge of working with ferrous, non-ferrous, and non-metallic materials, cutting oils, grinding compounds, and other processing materials
  • Proven competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related equipment
  • Availability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime
Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent
  • Associates Degree or a vocational or technical certification or a journeyman's card or license
  • High-speed packaging industry experience
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, SPC, and Lean Manufacturing
Competencies

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong problem-solving skills through individual and/or collaborative approaches
  • The ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, electrical schematics, and parts specifications
  • High competency in the use of micrometers, calipers, and related equipment
  • Proven experience with running precision equipment and equipment re-build knowledge
  • Ability to work independently or with a team
  • Capacity to think creatively and strategically to solve problems
  • Effective leadership skills, including conflict resolution, communication, decision-making, and employee relations
  • Excellent time management and project management skills, as well as the ability to multi-task
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven math and computer skills, and working knowledge of various Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, Access, etc.)
Physical Requirements

This role requires:

  • Regular sitting, standing, walking, using hands, reaching with hands and arms, and may require balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
  • Lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds on occasion
  • Specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to work up to 12 hours shifts, both day and evening
  • Employees will be required to have their own tools
Working Conditions

This role will be performed in a plant environment, with occasional movement to different parts of the manufacturing floor. The associate will be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicular traffic in the plant, as well as a wide range of temperatures. The noise level is frequently loud.
