Overview

This role is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a program designed to assist with student loan repayment. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within the designated timeframe. Approval and award amounts (up to $200,000) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a thorough review of the application.

Responsibilities

Medical Technologists (MTs) assigned to Evening/Night Shifts at this level will engage in more intricate functions. Responsibilities may encompass specific laboratory duties or projects such as laboratory safety officer, analyzer specialist, or quality control file maintenance. At the GS-10 level, MTs execute all the responsibilities of the GS-9 with elevated levels of professional duties and expertise. The incumbent serves as a generalist Medical Technologist on the Evening/Night Shifts of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The incumbent will rotate weekends and holidays.

The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist (Advanced Staff Technologist) may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • The Advanced MT is adept at performing both routine and specialized tasks with full technical proficiency and autonomy in the chemistry, hematology, immunology, blood bank, and microbiology departments.
  • Acts as the primary operator for large-scale automated analytical instrument systems.
  • Conducts complex maintenance procedures and is consulted as the in-house expert for troubleshooting issues.
  • Maintains employee competency records, oversees supply functions, reviews quality control, develops new methods, or provides training to employees or students.
  • Offers advisory services to technicians, technologists, and other specialists.
  • Modifies or adapts new methods or techniques to enhance or expand services.
  • Creates protocols for test performance and evaluation of results.
  • Conducts validation/method verification studies for new systems and collaborates with healthcare providers on logical protocols for diagnosis or risk assessment.
  • Assists in writing and updating procedure manuals and other documents for specific laboratory functions as directed by the supervisor.
  • Utilizes advanced computer skills in various applications to generate work-related information for supervisors and performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Ensures laboratory tests and procedures comply with accrediting agencies' standards and requirements.
  • Performs a comprehensive range of laboratory procedures associated with the medical technologist occupation. Organizes work and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Recognizes methodology limitations, such as linearity, interferences, sensitivity, and specificity, and considers these factors when assessing the validity of testing results.
  • Documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and performance improvement theories.
  • Employs Vista computer functions to generate reports and validate and review computer entries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday Shift Work (includes weekends/holidays on rotation). Possible shifts include:
  • 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm
  • 10:00 pm - 6:30 am
Pay and Benefits: Competitive salary with regular increases. Paid Time Off includes 37-50 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid Federal holidays per year. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service experience.

Retirement and Insurance: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA. Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care insurance options available.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

English Language Proficiency: Medical Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Education and Experience: To meet the minimum qualifications, candidates must possess:

(1) A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related field

AND

Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program accredited by recognized agencies.

(2) A bachelor's degree including specific coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, and mathematics

AND

Two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician.

-OR-

(3) A bachelor's degree including specific coursework in biological sciences, chemistry, and mathematics

AND

Five years of clinical laboratory experience.

Certification: Candidates must possess appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS from recognized certification agencies.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting and light carrying, use of both hands and fingers, standing for extended periods, and ability to distinguish colors.
