Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Business Services, the Senior Accountant plays a crucial role in the development of financial reports. This includes maintaining accounting standards, practices, and procedures to guarantee precise and timely financial statements. The Senior Accountant evaluates financial data leading to the preparation of annual financial statements in alignment with institutional policies and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations. This role also involves organizing the preparation of the Proposed, Revised, and Estimated budget summaries and analyses, ensuring ongoing budget compliance.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing general ledger journal entries, executing month-end closing procedures, performing account reconciliations, and analyzing balance appropriateness. This position is required to meet all scheduled monthly financial reporting deadlines while providing accurate and timely analyses and research on assigned departments or entities. The Senior Accountant ensures that all accounting functions comply with the established fiscal policies and procedures of the institution, as well as the Tennessee Board of Regents and the State of Tennessee. This role is essential for achieving the institution's objectives while adhering to academic accounting standards in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and GASB standards. The Senior Accountant must conduct thorough research to ensure consistency and accuracy in compliance with policies and procedures.

Job Duties
  • 50% - Oversee the workflow of accounting staff, including recruitment, evaluation, and recommendations in accordance with institutional policies. Manage and submit the personnel budget process. Review submissions for accuracy and completeness, and perform general ledger reconciliations on various liability accounts. Assist with inquiries related to general ledger transactions, ensuring all financial data is maintained accurately. Prepare and review account reconciliations and research accounting issues to recommend appropriate treatments. Organize files and document scanning. - (Essential)
  • 35% - Responsible for advanced reporting and reconciliation tasks. Prepare audit schedules, financial statements, and statistical data for the annual audit and Financial Report. Create complex journal entries and supporting documentation, and assist with special projects and ad hoc reporting. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes. Prepare monthly variance analyses for management review. Reconcile payroll, including tax, garnishment, direct deposit issues, overpayment adjustments, and retirement adjustments. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Perform other duties as assigned. - (Marginal)
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Demonstrated progressive experience as an accountant is essential. Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP and GASB standards is imperative. Proven detail-oriented work style complemented by effective written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word, is required. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in bookkeeping or accounting.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in public accounting is preferred. CPA, CGFM, or other relevant licensure is advantageous. Familiarity with Ellucian systems is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

ABILITIES
Ability to manage staff effectively while handling multiple tasks or projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines. Capable of prioritizing workload and working with minimal supervision. Maintains organized and up-to-date files. Able to perform advanced accounting duties in accordance with GAAP.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical office environment with the requirement to lift 10-15 pounds daily, engage in constant computer work, and remain seated or standing for extended periods.

KNOWLEDGE
Understanding of general ledger and related submodules, as well as Board of Regents and State of Tennessee Accounting Policies and Procedures. Extensive knowledge of GAAP and budgetary experience is necessary.

SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, independent judgment, organization, communication (both verbal and written), time management, project management, proficiency in integrated spreadsheets, and presentation skills. Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills, along with exceptional customer service skills and professional phone and email etiquette.
