Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Crew Leader I to join our team at the City of Norfolk, VA. As a key member of our Infrastructure Maintenance team, you will be responsible for leading a crew of maintenance personnel in the performance of various tasks related to storm water management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a crew of maintenance personnel in the performance of various tasks related to storm water management, including maintenance of roadside ditches, drains, retention ponds, and other storm water best management practices.
  • Perform the installation and repair of structures, including grading ditches, removing debris, cutting vegetation, cleaning lines, repairing structural damages, laying pipe, building structures, etc.
  • Resolve problems by investigating complaints, coordinating work, and documenting progress and productivity.
  • Document performance data utilizing a computer work management database system, including entering labor and equipment data, as well as work completed details accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Supervise employees by overseeing job sites, assigning workers to planned tasks, verifying the quality of work performed, tracking employee time, and preparing reports.
  • Coordinate the orientation and on-going training and professional development of workers through on-the-job training, tail-gating sessions, coaching, etc.
  • Manage material and equipment inventory and procure supplies and materials from vendors and the City's storehouse while following purchasing guidelines.
  • Assist with hiring staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety measures by conducting safety inspections, informing employees about safety precautions, evaluating worksites for OSHA compliance, ensuring Miss Utility protocol is followed, and ensuring traffic patterns for repair crews are followed.
  • Provide customer service by answering questions, describing repairs, and coordinating time for service requests.
  • Respond to emergencies by leading storm damage teams and standby teams to respond to after-hour emergencies.
Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • CDL may be required.
  • Pesticide Applicator a plus.
  • Ability to operate, train, and oversee the operations of heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to pickup trucks, sewer vacuum trucks, street sweepers, and dump trucks.
  • Ability to use and train employees on various hand tools, such as weed eaters, mowers, etc., in a safe manner.
  • Computer experience and knowledge required, including knowledge of work management database systems and the Microsoft suite.
  • Ability to read and interpret roadmaps, pipe plans, and schematics.
  • Ability to clearly understand verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to stoop, bend, lift 75 pounds, and climb on and off equipment.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, sometimes under emergency conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years or more of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to use considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to heavy motorized equipment.
  • Ability to work over open water or from boats.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work from elevations requiring fall protection.
