Optical Engineer
The Opportunity:

Imagine leveraging your engineering expertise to revolutionize the directed energy capabilities of the U.S. Navy. As an optical engineer, you possess a deep understanding of intricate systems, which is crucial for the support and evaluation of electro-optic (EO) sensors intended for integration into advanced high energy laser weapon systems. We are in search of an optical engineer who can apply their knowledge to aid in the advancement and assessment of cutting-edge EO sensors, thereby enhancing the operational effectiveness of today’s military personnel.

Our team is dedicated to the design, development, and evaluation of innovative directed energy weapon systems aimed at improving military capabilities. We require an optical engineer with a focus on the development and testing of high energy laser EO sensors. Your contributions will have a direct impact on the U.S. Navy and other defense organizations by providing essential optical technical expertise. We expect you to share your optical engineering knowledge through leadership and mentorship of junior engineers. This role offers an opportunity to utilize your experience in laser EO sensors while expanding your skill set into areas such as directed energy weapon systems.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the development and testing of EO sensors for integration into high energy laser (HEL) weapon systems.
  • Proficiency in optical system design and engineering trade analysis.
  • Experience in image processing for object tracking, detection, recognition, and identification.
  • Familiarity with optical testing equipment, including power meters, photodiodes, detectors, interferometers, wavefront sensors, spectrometers, and beam profilers.
  • Experience with design and analysis software such as FRED, Zemax, WaveTrain, and MATLAB, including model creation for optical ISR systems.
  • Ability to perform imaging and single cell detector specification and characterization, along with radiometric prediction, testing, and data analysis for imaging applications.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Over 10 years of experience with U.S. Navy Laser and EO systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience with HEL systems, including fiber laser technology.
  • 5+ years of experience in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) electro-optical systems development, analysis, testing, and evaluation.
  • Experience with ultrashort pulse lasers (USPL) research, including propagation and material effects.
  • Familiarity with the integration of laser systems and their major components, including the optical train.
  • Experience with laser weapon systems, including gain media, pump sources, thermal management, and control systems.
  • Knowledge of the effectiveness of HEL interactions with materials and components, laser propagation theory, and relevant military experiments.
  • Experience in project management and business proposal development.
  • Master's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.
Clearance:

Selected applicants will undergo a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Salary is determined by various factors, including location, education, skills, and experience. The projected compensation range for this position is $75,600.00 to $172,000.00 annually.
