Position Overview

Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) delivers empathetic care by upholding nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. The LPN also encourages teamwork and supports the contributions of team members. Supervisory responsibilities include overseeing PCAs, PCAs/US, ED Clerical/PCA, CRSS, and/or Techs.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conducts basic and/or advanced nursing tasks as appropriate for the department/unit.
  2. Provides and documents patient education tailored to physical, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors, while identifying barriers to learning.
  3. Records and communicates to the RN all observed abnormal and/or significant findings, including symptoms, abnormal drainage, reactions, responses to treatments, medications, and changes in the patient's condition.
  4. Documents all patient care activities and observations in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  5. Assists the care team with the patient discharge process.
  6. Collects and documents ongoing data for each assigned patient, covering normal systems review, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors across various age groups: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  7. Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives by serving on PI teams as needed, assisting with PI measures, and supporting necessary changes for enhancement.
  8. Completes initial and annual competency assessments as required by job classification.

  • Complies with all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Current Alabama LPN License is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training from the American Heart Association (AHA) is mandatory. Basic computer skills are necessary to support the use of electronic medical records, email, time and attendance software, learning management software, and intranet.

Must possess the ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Physical Factors
  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Must tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must reach reasonable distances in any direction.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, stoop, and lift.
  • Must be capable of running in emergencies.
  • Must have coordinated finger movement and the ability to perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with fingertips.
  • Must perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
  • Must possess the stamina to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
