Position Overview

Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) delivers empathetic care by upholding nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. The LPN also encourages teamwork and supports the contributions of colleagues. This role includes supervising PCAs, ED Clerical/PCA, CRSS, and/or Technicians.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conducts fundamental and/or advanced nursing tasks as appropriate for the specific department or unit.
  2. Provides and documents educational information for patients and significant others, considering physical, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors while identifying learning barriers.
  3. Records and communicates all observed abnormal and/or significant findings to the RN, including symptoms, unusual drainage, treatment reactions, medication responses, and changes in the patient's condition.
  4. Documents all patient care activities and observations in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  5. Assists the care team with the patient discharge process.
  6. Collects and maintains ongoing data on each assigned patient, including a comprehensive systems review and considerations for various age groups: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  7. Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives by serving on PI teams as needed, assisting with PI measures, and supporting necessary changes for enhancement.
  8. Completes initial and annual competency assessments as required for the job classification.

  • Complies with all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Current LPN License in Alabama is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training from the American Heart Association (AHA) is mandatory. Basic computer skills are necessary to utilize electronic medical records, email, time and attendance software, learning management systems, and intranet.

Must possess the ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

PHYSICAL FACTORS
  • Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must reach in various directions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, sit, stoop, and lift.
  • Must be able to run in emergencies.
  • Requires coordinated finger movements and the ability to perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with fingertips.
  • Must perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Normal or corrected hearing and vision are required.
  • Must have the stamina to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Physical presence onsite is essential.
