Automation Systems Engineer

Process Automation – Controls.Instrumentations, Inc. is seeking a dedicated Automation Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. We specialize in control systems integration and regulatory compliance engineering, serving a diverse range of industries including Bio-Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, Medical Devices, Food & Beverage, and Water/Wastewater.


Job Overview:
The Automation Systems Engineer will take charge of all software-related components for various machinery and tooling initiatives. These projects can range from small-scale research and development tasks to extensive production systems. The engineer will collaborate with clients to identify their project requirements and specifications.

These initiatives will typically involve multiple disciplines, and the engineer will partner with team members to provide a cohesive and effective solution.


Key Responsibilities:

• Design, test, implement, and integrate software solutions for custom automation, machine vision, feedback systems, robotics, and data management.
• Program and integrate a variety of commercial components (cameras, robots, sensors, motors, etc.).
• Ensure adherence to project budgets and timelines.
• Communicate progress and challenges with Project Managers.
• Assist the production team during the debugging, commissioning, and installation phases.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams for mechanical and electrical integration.
• Manage external suppliers effectively.
• Work closely with clients to refine and align project requirements.
• Engage with clients on functional and user interface specifications (HMIs, MES integration, etc.).
• Support equipment deployment and maintenance at client locations, with occasional travel expected (approximately 5%).


Qualifications:

• Minimum of 1 year of experience in software development for PLCs or similar devices; relevant college experience is acceptable.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or SolidWorks for creating wiring diagrams.
• At least 1 year of experience in a controls design capacity within an industrial automation or machine building context, or experience in a manufacturing setting.


Preferred Skills:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering discipline.
• Knowledge of programming and tuning servomotors, stepper motors, and VFD-controlled motors.
• Familiarity with Vision Systems (Cognex, Keyence, etc.).
• Experience with Robot Systems (Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, Mitsubishi, Epson, etc.).
• Understanding of field devices (sensors and actuators), digital and analog I/O signal processing, and interfacing techniques.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages (VB.NET or C preferred).
• Basic knowledge of HMI/GUI and PLC development environments.
• Familiarity with .NET and COM/ActiveX environments and SDK/APIs implementation.
• Understanding of various communication protocols (RS232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
• Direct experience troubleshooting automated systems.
• Ability to interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics.
• Capability to read mechanical drawings.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
• Organized with proficient computer skills, including MS Project and Excel.

Travel Requirements:
Up to 10% for visits to suppliers, collaborators, and client sites outside of California.
