Job Summary

As a Supervisory Nuclear Engineer (Branch Head) in the Nuclear Test Engineering Division of the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department (NEPD) of PSNS and IMF, you will serve as the primary contact between the shipyard and outside activities on technical matters. You will be responsible for monitoring performance of reactor plant work, identifying problems, evaluating alternate approaches to work performance, and providing direction to appropriate Shipyard managers responsible for this work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first-line supervision for nuclear engineers and technicians assigned to the branch.
  • Promote and facilitate continuous learning and employee development, which includes evaluating qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities to determine areas of improvement and development.
  • Train, mentor, or assign dedicated, experienced mentors, to junior engineers and direct their development in becoming fully qualified.
  • Participate in meetings with stakeholders to coordinate work across all stakeholders and discuss how work will be accomplished.
Requirements

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Engineer providing leadership and technical direction for nuclear engineering projects in support of the repair, maintenance, overhaul, or testing, of nuclear-powered ships or submarines.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree.

To be acceptable, the program must:

(1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or

(2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics:

(a) statics, dynamics;

(b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships);

(c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics;

(d) thermodynamics;

(e) electrical fields and circuits;

(f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and

(g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

OR Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico The FE examination is not administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.


OR Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above).

The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A (above) OR Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.

Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

This position requires exposure to high noise levels.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
