Established in 1844, Butler Hospital stands as the only non-profit, free-standing psychiatric facility in the state, offering specialized assessment and treatment for adults, seniors, and adolescents facing major psychiatric disorders and substance use issues.

As the primary teaching hospital for psychiatry and behavioral health affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Butler Hospital is recognized as a leading institution in its field. It serves as the flagship hospital for the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, which ranks among the top ten in the United States. Butler also acts as the main training site for the Brown University General Residency in Psychiatry, with many of its physicians and psychologists participating in innovative clinical research initiatives in collaboration with the Brown Institute for Brain Science.

Butler Hospital is part of the Care New England Health System, employing approximately 900 clinical and non-clinical staff members, both full-time and part-time.
