Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Food Service Manager to supervise and participate in the management of one or more food service areas. The successful candidate will plan and oversee food preparation and service, estimate and order food and supplies, maintain inventory of supplies and materials, and supervise employees and students employed in assigned areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in determining material and labor needs for assigned areas and plan menus.
  • Supervise food production and service, ensuring quality and quantity meet established standards.
  • Supervise cleaning and maintenance of assigned areas and equipment, ensuring cleanliness and sanitation requirements are met.
  • Order food, beverages, supplies, and equipment, ensuring correct items are received and stored properly.
  • Maintain accurate records of food and beverages served, hours worked by employees, and sales and customer counts.
  • Supervise cash handling and operate cash registers in accordance with University and department policies.
  • Formulate procedures to minimize operating costs and communicate with subordinates.
  • Respond to customer complaints and train and supervise employees.

Requirements

  • At least five years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in food service work in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, catering firm, government, or private institution.
  • Diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical, or vocational school with a major in home economics, culinary arts, food services, or food trades may be substituted for required experience.
  • Knowledge of standard methods and techniques used in food preparation and serving in a high-volume setting.
  • Knowledge of proper quality, appearance, and condition of foods.
  • Knowledge of standard sanitation methods and techniques used in food handling and storage.
  • Ability to judge food quality by sensory observation.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and give precise and understandable instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and establish harmonious working relationships with a diverse population.
  • Ability to supervise and work varied shifts and/or irregular hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to determine material and labor needs without incurring waste or deficits.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and handle customer complaints judiciously.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • This position requires the ability to balance, carry, pull/push, stand, bend, drive, reach, sit, twist, lift, and perform repetitive movement.

Additional Details

  • This position is designated as essential.
  • Incumbents must be certified as food handlers within six months of appointment start date through a recognized program approved by the University of Massachusetts.

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
  • 7am-3pm, rotating days off, may include weekends, holidays, and evenings.
