Job Summary

Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Materials Engineer to lead our research efforts in materials development and analysis. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for driving innovation and advancing our understanding of materials science in support of sustainable industrial development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage materials analysis programs to support internal research and external customer needs, focusing on product failure analysis and industrial process quality improvement.
  • Establish and enhance laboratory capabilities for materials analysis, with a focus on non-destructive evaluation technologies.
  • Prepare and present technical results of research, including publications and presentations.
  • Develop proposals for external funding to support research initiatives.
  • Support the expansion of existing research programs, with a focus on remanufacturing, recycling, process material and energy efficiency, condition assessment and prognostics, and additive manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support sustainable product design efforts from a materials perspective.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in materials development or analysis, with a strong background in metals and metallurgy.
  • Significant experience in analysis of materials and material failures.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to drive design and development projects.
  • Strong organizational and motivational skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. (citizen or permanent resident status).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in developing and transferring processes from the laboratory to the production floor.
  • Understanding of or experience with remanufacturing, recycling technologies, or additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with protective materials (including fabrics) for high-temperature applications.
  • Experience writing proposals for industrial or agency-funded research projects.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Materials Science or a related field.
