Role Overview: The Office of Communications plays a vital role in articulating the CPS vision, mission, and initiatives to both internal and external audiences. This office also supports schools by highlighting their achievements and managing crisis communications through a comprehensive array of tools and strategies aimed at engaging essential stakeholders.

Position Summary: Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Media Relations, the Media Relations Assistant is responsible for enhancing and maintaining effective communication processes for one of the District's most visible teams. This role involves assisting with daily operations of the press team and coordinating CPS press events that feature senior District and school leadership, faculty, and staff. The position requires adept management of various tasks, optimizing press operations, and ensuring effective storytelling during public education events, while also considering optimal visual and broadcast opportunities. Special projects may be assigned as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the press team's annual schedule, aligning with significant school year milestones, storytelling opportunities, and events in collaboration with the Executive Director of Media Relations.
  • Utilize tools and strategies to enhance the team's daily media operations, including tracking media inquiries, stories, and proactive media outreach.
  • Coordinate logistics for public appearances, photo opportunities, and press events, which includes: developing event timelines, identifying speakers, organizing the speaking program, and preparing necessary materials for participants.
  • Act as a liaison, regularly engaging with various departments, external agencies, and local, state, and national media outlets.
  • Collaborate with departments and city agencies to conceptualize and execute events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years of experience in communications, media relations, marketing/public relations, political campaigns, or education policy is required.
  • Experience in public education communications is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to the dynamic environment of a busy press office.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to identify underlying issues and propose effective communication solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, focused on serving both internal and external partners.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds to manage impactful communication initiatives, including media interviews, briefings, statements, and events.

Other Requirements:

  • A valid Illinois Driver's license is required for travel to events.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as necessary.

Employment Conditions:

As a condition of employment with Chicago Public Schools, employees are required to establish and maintain residency within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of hire and must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless exempted for medical or religious reasons.
