Position Overview:
The Police Cadet program serves as a foundational training initiative aimed at fostering career growth within the law enforcement sector. As a Police Cadet, individuals will operate under direct to general supervision, engaging in non-hazardous responsibilities throughout the Police Department.

Work Schedule:
This role is part-time, with an expected commitment of approximately 24 hours per week, allowing for limited benefits. Cadets may be scheduled for any shift, with consideration given to educational commitments.

Evaluation Process:
Qualified candidates will undergo a written assessment focusing on English proficiency, public relations, basic math skills, and written communication. Successful candidates will then be invited for an oral board interview. Failure to pass either the written or interview assessments will result in disqualification from further consideration.

Assessment Criteria:
Written Exam: Pass/Fail
Oral Board Interview: 100%

Background Check:
All applicants must successfully complete a thorough background investigation, which encompasses financial stability, driving history, criminal background, substance use, polygraph testing, and overall character assessment. A medical examination, including a drug screening, is also required prior to employment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enforce parking regulations and issue citations.
  • Investigate and document various crime and traffic incidents in the absence of a suspect.
  • Collect and secure evidence.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as responding to phone inquiries, processing reports, and maintaining records.
  • Conduct fingerprinting.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public.
  • Conduct custodial checks on detainees.
  • Collect fees for public document requests.
  • Fulfill crossing guard responsibilities.
  • Manage traffic control duties.
  • Serve legal documents.
  • Carry out additional related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Completion of high school (diploma or G.E.D.) or current enrollment in the final year of high school is required.

Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment and may remain in the program until their 24th birthday. If high school is completed, candidates must maintain enrollment in an accredited college or university with a minimum of nine units per semester and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

Experience: No prior experience is necessary.

License: A valid California class "C" driver's license is mandatory.

Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be capable of sitting, standing, walking, running, climbing, stooping, bending, and reaching. The role requires the ability to physically restrain and manage combative individuals. This position involves significant physical activity, including writing and keyboard use. Candidates should be prepared for exposure to varying environmental conditions and must be available for shift work, on-call duties, overtime, and standby assignments.
