Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Protection Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with fire safety codes and regulations in various structures and installations within the City of West Covina. This role involves promoting fire safety, investigating the causes and origins of fires, and enforcing applicable laws and ordinances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct technical inspections of buildings and occupancies to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and regulations.
  • Review building plans to ensure adequacy of exits, fire protection equipment, and water supply.
  • Develop and present public education programs on fire safety and prevention.
  • Investigate the causes and origins of fires, gather evidence, and assist in preparing cases for prosecution.
  • Coordinate with other agencies, such as the Building Division and Planning Division, to ensure effective fire safety measures.
  • Review statistics on fire causes and recommend modifications to the Fire Code as needed.
  • Review the effectiveness of fire protection programs and recommend changes to improve outcomes.
Requirements
  • Related coursework in fire technology, fire science, or a closely related field is required.
  • Three years of experience in fire prevention and inspection or building inspection is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • California State Fire Training Fire Prevention 1A, 1B, and 1C certification is desirable.
