Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations - COSA

COSA is in search of a highly capable individual to take on the role of Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations.

The selected candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with the Superintendent and other senior leadership to establish and execute the operational frameworks and business systems that underpin the organization’s educational and student support initiatives.

As the primary leader for daily business and operational functions, the Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations will report directly to the Superintendent and will oversee the strategic planning and efficiency of various business operations, including finance and accounting, operational services (security, nutrition, transportation, procurement, and publishing), technology, facilities management, and modernization projects.

This role requires a proactive approach to engage and communicate with all key stakeholders, including students, educators, families, community members, and business leaders, ensuring that COSA fulfills its commitments to students and families, promotes high achievement, and advances equity.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in partnership with the Superintendent and district leadership to prioritize initiatives that ensure equitable and high academic performance for all students.
  • Foster collaboration and build alliances with diverse stakeholders at all levels, including district staff, students, families, and community organizations.
  • Assume the day-to-day responsibilities of the Superintendent as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with local, state, and national agencies on business matters.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Superintendent on fiscal and operational issues.
  • Assist in the overall planning, organization, and management of the organization.
  • Set clear goals and objectives for the Business Operations departments, providing direction for staff and programs.
  • Identify and implement innovative business practices to enhance service efficiency.
  • Participate as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Prepare and present reports on financial activities, budget guidelines, staffing ratios, and long-term financial planning to keep the Superintendent and Board informed.

Provide leadership and oversight to senior leaders and teams responsible for:


  • Finance, budget management, accounting, and payroll
  • Business operations, procurement, security, nutrition services, and transportation
  • Facilities planning, project management, and operations
  • School modernization and bond management
  • Information technology infrastructure and innovation
  • Supervising the development of the annual budget to meet the needs of the organization while adhering to regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Business or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Over 10 years of experience as a successful business leader, including at least 5 years in leadership roles in finance, accounting, business operations, technology, or facilities management.
  • Any other combination of training and experience that could provide the necessary skills and knowledge may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in PK-12 public education, preferably within a large urban school system.
  • Proven success in implementing and leading shared services.
  • Experience in developing large-scale business programs in an educational reform context.
  • Ability to think systemically and develop actionable plans.
  • Demonstrated success in working effectively with diverse staff, students, and communities to achieve common goals.
  • Experience in project management, with the ability to allocate resources across multiple initiatives.
  • Strong consensus-building and conflict resolution skills; comfortable engaging in difficult conversations.
  • Ability to navigate complex political structures and systems.
  • Skilled in team building and management, particularly during periods of growth and change.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to accept and integrate constructive feedback.
  • High level of personal integrity.
  • Capacity to lead in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
