Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team at Brown University Health. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide intensive case management to clients with substance abuse issues, working closely with them to develop and implement treatment plans that promote optimal functioning and health.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in accordance with Gateway policies and procedures, as well as Medicaid guidelines.
  • Provide ongoing assessment and problem-solving services to clients, including skills training, supervision, and environmental adaptations to assist with activities of daily living.
  • Conduct substance abuse treatment with clients, adhering to the 12 core functions of substance abuse counseling as defined by the ICRC.
  • Monitor medication and ensure clients understand prescribed dosage, monitor side effects, and take medication accordingly.
  • Maintain a caseload of clients assigned by the Program Director/Supervisor and coordinate activities, make appointments, and accompany clients as noted on the treatment plan.
  • Provide services in the areas of assessment, counseling, treatment planning, consultation, client education, and referral pertaining to substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
  • Attend agency or supervisor required inservices, as well as other agency inservices, and participate in at least one course, seminar, or conference for improvement of job skills per year.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a Behavioral Health-related field, with LCDP preferred.
  • CPR training within 90 days of employment and maintenance annually.
  • Maintain a valid RI license at all times and use of a car during normal working hours or other means of transportation to complete major functions of the job.
  • Physical examination and Mantoux test annually.
  • Maintain automobile liability insurance coverage for the vehicle used in accordance with center requirements.
  • Rhode Island Certification as a Mental Health Case Manager within one year of date of hire and Rhode Island Certification as a Chemical Dependency Professional within two years of date of hire.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
