Position Overview:
Metro Health (now the University of Michigan Health-West) is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Nursing Administration. This role is aligned with the ANA Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists Statement on Specialist Practice and Education. In collaboration with Clinical Service Leadership, the Clinical Nurse Specialist is accountable for enhancing nursing practice standards across three critical spheres: patient care, nursing staff, and organizational systems through expert clinical practice, education, consultation, systems leadership, and research.

Key Responsibilities:
This leadership position requires proactive engagement, innovation, and a commitment to effecting change. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will:

  • Utilize advanced clinical judgment and knowledge to improve patient care.
  • Provide expert nursing insights to inform organizational planning and decision-making.
  • Establish criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices.
  • Engage directly with patients and families to promote health and enhance quality of life.
  • Adopt a holistic approach to managing health, illness, and disease.
  • Consult and guide nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams in complex patient care.
  • Mentor nursing personnel and support collaborative practices.
  • Influence resource utilization to ensure safe, high-quality, and cost-effective patient care.
  • Collaborate with Nurse Educators on clinical education program development.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at continuous quality improvement in care delivery.

Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist certification within one year of hire.
  • Graduate education must include clinical application of the CNS role; if not, a post-master's CNS certificate is required within three years.
  • Current, unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse licensure.
  • A minimum of three years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Expertise in a specialty area, with national certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced practice nursing skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, and mentoring.
  • Ability to utilize evidence-based practices to develop and implement standards and policies.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required for specific service areas.
