Job Summary

The State of Illinois is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Rehabilitation/Mobility Instructor Trainee to join our team at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired. As a Rehabilitation/Mobility Instructor Trainee, you will participate in an agency-sponsored training program to develop knowledge, understanding, and practical skills in instructing persons who are blind and visually impaired.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Participate in a comprehensive training program to develop skills in orientation and mobility, braille reading and writing, and instructional techniques.
  2. Observe and assist experienced Rehabilitation/Mobility Instructors in their daily work activities.
  3. Conduct ongoing evaluations of assigned students to assess their progress and provide feedback.
  4. Attend school faculty and staff meetings and workshops to stay up-to-date on current agency programs, policies, and procedures.
  5. Develop and implement instructional plans to support students in achieving their goals.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned or required to support the mission of the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired.
Requirements
  1. Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited college or university.
  2. Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) within the time parameters of the Rehabilitation/Mobility Instructor Trainee Program.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. One year of professional experience establishing trusting relationships with customers, family members, and public and private agencies.
  2. One year of professional experience developing sequential instructional plans.
  3. One year of professional experience working with current education trends, techniques, and best practices.
  4. One year of professional experience instructing persons who are blind, visually impaired, or Deafblind in skills of independence.
  5. One year of professional experience utilizing braille reading and writing.
  6. One year of professional experience working with the emotional, environmental, and psychological problems confronting individuals who are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Deafblind.
Working Conditions
  1. Ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  2. Ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
