Position Overview:
The Solid Waste Division (SWD) is seeking a motivated and collaborative individual for the role of Junior Environmental Scientist within our Environmental Science & Compliance Unit (ESCU). This entry-level opportunity is ideal for those passionate about safeguarding the natural environment and contributing to the well-being of communities in King County. The work performed in this role is crucial for assessing the environmental implications of our operations and aligning them with the overarching goals of King County.
Role Responsibilities:
This position collaborates with a team of environmental specialists to execute a comprehensive environmental monitoring and sampling initiative across various SWD locations, including active and closed landfills, as well as transfer stations. The Junior Environmental Scientist will primarily engage in fieldwork, focusing on the safe collection of high-quality environmental data. Office responsibilities will include tasks that support monitoring and sampling, such as equipment calibration and ensuring data integrity.
The successful candidate will gain valuable experience in diverse environmental monitoring and sampling tasks, including groundwater, wastewater, stormwater, soil, and air quality assessments. This role provides a foundational understanding of the engineering and scientific principles involved in solid waste management, enhancing future career prospects within King County or beyond.
Team Dynamics:
The SWD environmental monitoring team consists of professionals ranging from entry-level to senior scientists, all dedicated to gathering environmental data utilized by SWD and regulatory bodies to ensure our operations uphold public health and environmental standards. Collaboration with environmental compliance coordinators, engineers, project managers, and site operators is essential, as they rely on the data collected for informed decision-making.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

- Relevant certifications such as CESCL and OSHA HAZWOPER.
