Role Summary
The Graduate Assistant role encompasses various types of appointments aimed at supporting the University through teaching, research, or administrative functions within academic and non-academic departments.
Efforts are made to align Graduate Assistants with positions that correspond to their field of study or that enhance their professional skill set.
Graduate Assistantships are assigned within specific departments or units and are validated by the Graduate School.Types of Graduate Assistantships
In the School of Nursing, there are four categories of Graduate Assistantships:
Graduate Research Assistant:
This role involves conducting research tasks for a designated faculty member, including data collection, analysis, literature review, and assistance with grant applications and reports.
Graduate Instructional Assistant:
Responsibilities may include providing tutorial support in group settings, assisting with simulation labs, or performing course-related tasks.
Graduate Clinical Assistant:
This position may involve engaging in clinical practices such as student counseling or participating in health and wellness initiatives.
Graduate Teaching Associate:
This role serves as the Instructor of Record for undergraduate Nursing courses.
Successful candidates may be eligible for a tuition waiver based on qualifications and funding availability. All positions require on-site work, with most students typically working a ten-hour day, although some schedules may vary.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify for a Graduate Assistantship, candidates must:
- Maintain good academic standing at all times.
- Be enrolled full-time, generally requiring a minimum of 9 credits.
- Demonstrate satisfactory progress toward their degree as defined by their academic program and the Graduate School.
- Meet employment eligibility requirements in the U.S.
Additional Qualifications
For certain roles, candidates may be required to hold an active RN license and be eligible to practice in North Carolina.
