JOB OVERVIEW
The Senior Civil Engineer role involves overseeing and coordinating the efforts of engineering teams within a significant engineering division. This position is responsible for conducting feasibility analyses, creating designs, specifications, and cost estimates for municipal or utility engineering initiatives. The role includes inspecting public works projects to ensure adherence to established plans, specifications, and relevant engineering standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing all phases of project design, construction, and operational completion.
- Executing complex engineering tasks and serving as a representative in discussions with community groups, architects, engineers, contractors, and governmental bodies.
- Estimating construction expenses and developing project budgets.
- Monitoring consultant agreements, assessing contractor and consultant performance, negotiating project scopes, and ensuring compliance with contracts.
- Reviewing engineering plans, studies, and maps related to subdivisions and public improvements for private developments.
- Providing engineering support for public works and utility operations and maintenance.
- Supervising and evaluating the performance of subordinate engineering staff.
NOTES:
- Employees represented by the Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled for general wage increases.
- Eligible benefitted employees hired on or after a specified date will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Senior Civil Engineers with valid State of California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer may qualify for additional compensation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of three years of full-time professional civil engineering experience is required.
REGISTRATION: A valid registration as a Professional Civil Engineer with the State of California is mandatory.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.
DESIRABLE SKILLS:
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Experience in leading and supervising teams of engineers, consultants, and contractors.
- Commitment to fostering diversity in the workplace.
- Proficiency in computer applications relevant to engineering.
- Experience in managing infrastructure asset budgets and schedules.
- Knowledge of structural engineering and water system design.
- Project management experience.
- Familiarity with local design guidelines and codes.
