POSITION OVERVIEW

The Electrical Engineer specializing in Automation & Controls for XPS Foam will be instrumental in collaborating with XPS Foam production facilities and various stakeholders within the XPS Foam sector. This role entails managing medium to large-scale capital projects for the XPS Foam division while delivering technical assistance to manufacturing operations, maintenance, and process optimization.

The Engineer is tasked with enhancing safety, productivity, and quality metrics, while simultaneously minimizing costs and ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards. Key responsibilities include converting operational needs into engineering calculations, specifications, project scopes, cost estimates, and design documentation; preparing procurement documentation for equipment and installation contracts; overseeing system startup and support; and evaluating alternatives to maximize capital investment returns through innovative solutions and new technologies.

The Automation & Controls Engineer will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for XPS Foam processes, safeguarding intellectual property for equipment and system designs, supporting Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives, assisting production sites, and ensuring compliance with safety systems related to blowing agents in accordance with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standards. Additionally, the Engineer will contribute to the maintenance strategy for spare parts and define essential spare parts for key process equipment. Support for research and development trials, product innovation, and piloting new machinery will also be part of the role.

REPORTING STRUCTURE: Reports to the Engineering Leader for Capital Delivery in XPS Foam

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Location: Hybrid work schedule
  • Travel: Up to a specified percentage based on project requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage electrical project execution for capital initiatives to ensure adherence to design principles and completion within budget and timeline constraints.
  • Supervise contract engineering teams to guarantee quality in design and commissioning tasks.
  • Commit to achieving zero injuries during capital projects by prioritizing safety in design and commissioning processes.
  • Implement sound engineering practices to facilitate project completion.
  • Oversee capital projects from initiation to completion, including writing capital approval requests and ensuring funding aligns with project needs.
  • Ensure timelines from project inception to startup and commissioning are consistently met.
Lead electrical improvements to enhance product quality, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Comply with safety protocols and critical operational requirements during process implementation.
  • Follow all safety policies and standards specific to the role and facility.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently by collaborating with engineering firms, including defining project scope, estimating costs, and coordinating electrical resources for commissioning and startup.
  • Monitor projects for compliance with relevant codes and engineering standards.
  • Utilize effective project management methodologies to guide project execution.
  • Ensure all projects align with defined scope and operational expectations regarding functionality and costs.
Provide expert consultation on critical control applications relevant to XPS Foam.
  • Deliver technical support to manufacturing operations, maintenance, and the R&D team focused on XPS Foam.
  • Assist plant personnel in diagnosing issues with various control systems.
  • Ensure PLC/HMI controls are configured and programmed for optimal performance.
  • Guarantee electrical safety through adherence to standards, control reliability, and safety mechanisms.
  • Act as a technical authority within the division.
  • Provide process and technical support to key business stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline

A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in executing electrical engineering projects

At least 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Experience in continuous manufacturing processes

Leadership experience in a matrixed organizational structure

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant electrical codes
  • Experience in developing project scopes, cost estimates, contractor bid packages, and evaluating vendor proposals.
  • Strong leadership and project management capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities to assess situations and devise effective solutions.
  • Proficient in utilizing data for decision-making to minimize manufacturing losses and costs.
  • Adaptability to shifting priorities and workloads.
  • Strong planning, resource allocation, and delegation skills.
  • Ability to deliver results swiftly, both independently and as part of a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of motor control systems, programmable controllers, software, instrumentation, feedback control systems, and control networks.
  • Experience with Rockwell Allen Bradley PLC and HMI Programming (RSLogix5000, Studio5000, FactoryTalk View), Siemens TIA portal, Wonderware, and/or Inductive Automation.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic, hydraulic systems, control valves, and servo mechanisms.
  • Experience in equipment checkout, debugging, startup/commissioning, and troubleshooting.
