Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Distribution Field Engineer to join our team in Providence, RI. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a reliable and modern distribution system by using engineering expertise to integrate smart devices into the existing network, scoping large capital distribution projects, developing strategies to deliver programmatic upgrades within a yearly budget, investigating and providing resolutions to customer inquiries and supporting operations with technical support.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Respond promptly to customer service requests and reactive operational reviews as they develop.
  2. Investigate and provide solutions to address customer voltage concerns, power quality issues, and reliability questions.
  3. Independently collate and analyze data using department-specific tools, methods, and formats to resolve complex problems.
  4. Support continued development, enhancement, validation, and testing of advanced control systems, including Fault Location, Isolation, and System Restoration (FLISR) schemes, auto-transfer schemes, Volt VAr Optimization (VVO) schemes, Distribution Fault Location schemes, and advanced protection schemes for special applications.
  5. Work closely with the SCADA/EMS team to integrate control systems and technologies into various applications used by System Operators, Engineers, and applicable Company personnel.
  6. Develop conceptual project plans that economically address identified system needs.
  7. Participate in project design reviews and act as the project team lead for assigned projects.
  8. Present and defend project recommendations for executive approval of both technical merit and financial impact.
  9. Effectively form project teams of internal and external stakeholders for the development of project plans.
  10. Lead the implementation of engineering design for a specific area through the management of an engineering team and in consultation with other groups within the area to ensure design is fit for purpose and benefits PPL RI operations.
  11. Make authoritative technical recommendations to provide design solutions that have a significant impact on business performance in the short and longer term.
  12. Lead, motivate, and develop a professional team of engineering staff, prioritize work, and allocate resources to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and customer needs.
  13. Develop processes and review policies relating to engineering systems/processes to ensure they are in line with strategic business objectives and meet the needs of customers and regulators.
  14. Proactively build and maintain internal and external networks to penetrate, absorb, and apply technical best practice to the engineering discipline.
  15. Develop process and policy specifications, criteria, and options and evaluate those options to support senior management decision-making in the relevant field.
  16. Work with business units to translate objectives into well-defined requirements with clearly defined business cases to support change and innovation within PPL RI.
Qualifications:

Candidates must meet the basic qualifications and pass all required tests or assessments to receive consideration.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility form upon hire.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Engineer: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.
  • Support Engineer: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology discipline. In lieu of degree, applicants who have PE license in the state of Rhode Island will be considered. Minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology discipline. In lieu of degree, applicants who have PE license in the state of Rhode Island will be considered. Minimum of 5 years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by ABET or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements. Internship/co-op in the energy industry preferred. Completed a power systems course in college. Engineer in Training Certificate.
  • Support Engineer: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university program accredited by ABET or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. (Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.) Engineer in Training certificate. Experience in the energy industry. Knowledge of 3-phase AC systems. Experience with distribution automation, SCADA, metering, and control. Experience with distributed energy resources (DER), battery storage installations (BESS), and sectionalizing devices. Experience with stray voltage analysis and identifying resolutions. Experience with reviewing reliability reports and identifying solutions to improve reliability. Professional Engineer licensed in the state of Rhode Island.
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university program accredited by ABET or recognized by ABET as substantially equivalent. (Discipline required will vary by the specific job requirements.) Professional Engineer registered in applicable state. Experience in the energy industry. Knowledge of 3-phase AC systems. Experience with distribution automation, SCADA, metering, and control. Experience with distributed energy resources (DER), battery storage installations (BESS), and sectionalizing devices. Experience with stray voltage analysis and identifying resolutions. Experience with reviewing reliability reports and identifying solutions to improve reliability. Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
