Job Summary

The Associate Director of Programs and Assessment will serve as a key member of the Department of Campus Recreation leadership team, overseeing the daily operation, staffing, budgeting, and strategic visioning for multiple program areas. This includes coordinating research and assessment initiatives, leading wellness programs, and managing special events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of program areas, including intramurals, aquatics, club sports, nutrition, fitness, youth programs, esports, and special events.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for Competitive Sports, Fitness, Nutrition, Aquatics, and Youth Programs.
  • Compile, prepare, and maintain records for the department, including budget, participation numbers, injury reports, and incident reports.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal health, safety, and employment laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for large-scale activities and events.
  • Serve as the primary point person for special events within the department.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships to promote wellness initiatives.
  • Plan, organize, market, and carry out special recreation-related events.
  • Research new trends and grow activity offerings based on university needs and industry trends.
  • Participate in strategic planning.
  • Ensure long and short-term goals are met.
  • Understand and represent the mission and vision of Utah State University and the Department of Campus Recreation.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.
Personnel Management
  • Manage personnel, including hiring, training, scheduling, disciplinary functions, and associated paperwork.
  • Oversight of program coordinators, registered dietitians, managers, and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Deliver a comprehensive student development program for student staff.
Budget Management
  • Develop, monitor, and adhere to program budgets.
  • Review expenditures, approve purchases, and determine labor budget.
  • Propose and develop new revenue streams.
  • Manage sponsorship donations from USU and community entities.
Research and Assessment
  • Maintain the assessment agenda of the Campus Recreation department.
  • Evaluate programs and services to determine effectiveness and satisfaction.
  • Create and evaluate community outreach programs and services.
  • Implement and review annual assessment of student and program learning outcomes.
  • Produce an annual end-of-year report.
Other
  • Prepare written communications, including monthly/annual reports, safety reports, participation statistics, etc.
  • Participate on various committees as assigned.
  • This position description indicates the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferably with a major in sports management, recreation administration, physical education, kinesiology/exercise science, business administration, or a related field.
  • Equivalent of five years full-time, professional-level experience managing and developing facility operation management, program management, or other community recreational programs.
  • Ability to work varying hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Six or more years of professional experience overseeing facility operation management or recreation program management.
  • Standard Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED, and/or instructor certification.
  • Active involvement in NIRSA – Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of administration, personnel, and organizational management, budgeting, computer hardware/software operation, principles of superior customer service, and effective marketing.
  • Ability to interpret and apply university, Aggies Recreation Center, Campus Recreation, and USU rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Possess skills to establish programmatic goals, facilitate change, and implement innovative programs and services.
  • Ability to oversee the work of others.
  • Ability to coordinate the timely completion of multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as a part of a team to reach set goals.
  • Possess skills to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and be able to generate and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Provide excellent customer service. Adapt to changes in the work environment. Work effectively in a multicultural environment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
