THE POSITION The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services, is offering numerous opportunities for Youth Justice Program Trainees.

These positions are entry-level roles with significant potential for career advancement.

Upon successful completion of the six-month training program, individuals will be promoted to a Juvenile Justice Specialist, accompanied by a salary increase.


As a member of the South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit, you will engage in vital work aimed at providing care for Pennsylvania's most vulnerable youth, while promoting hope and pathways to success.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK As a Youth Justice Program Trainee, you will partake in a structured six-month formal classroom instruction and hands-on training program designed to cultivate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and professional traits necessary for a Juvenile Justice Specialist.

Your responsibilities will include attending and successfully completing the Juvenile Justice Academy, which encompasses coursework in professionalism and ethics, adolescent development and behavior, safety and security principles, group facilitation skills, effective communication, relevant Pennsylvania codes, CPR/AED and basic first-aid, mechanical device usage, suicide management and awareness, Safe Crisis Management, medication awareness, cultural sensitivity, fire safety, and search procedures.

As you progress through the training period, you will increasingly apply the techniques and knowledge acquired.

Work will be conducted under the close supervision of a Juvenile Justice Specialist Supervisor and/or other senior personnel who will assign tasks, provide guidance, and review your work for quality and compliance with established standards, policies, procedures, and regulations.



Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full-time employment. The current starting salary for the Youth Justice Program Trainee position is $20.34 per hour.

Upon successful completion of the six-month trainee program, you will be elevated to a Juvenile Justice Specialist with a salary of $26.55 per hour.

Evening and night shifts receive a shift differential.

The Department of Human Services offers excellent benefits, contractual pay increases, paid holidays, leave entitlements, opportunities for advancement, and shift selection, all within a supportive work environment.

Shift work is required in a 24/7/365 operation, including holidays and weekends. Shifts typically consist of 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, and 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM.

A standard work week consists of five days with two days off, subject to operational needs.

Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at an annual salary of $42,437 (before taxes).


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Special Requirement:

You must be at least 21 years old at the time of application.

Other Requirements:
PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title. You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:
A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination and drug screening.

This position is governed by the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.

Under this law, a conditional offer of employment will necessitate the submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
