A Clinical Laboratory Technician plays a vital role in the healthcare system by conducting tests and analyses on blood and other bodily fluids. This position is essential for assisting healthcare providers in diagnosing and treating patients. Technicians are responsible for the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring that both automated and manual tests are performed accurately and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct analysis and testing of specimens, including proficiency testing and manual methods, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot moderately complex laboratory equipment.
- Utilize laboratory information systems to collect and interpret data effectively.
- Perform quality control measures and interpret results.
- Adhere to all laboratory and hospital protocols, including NYS, TJC, and HIPAA standards, while maintaining a safe and compliant environment.
- Engage in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives, collaborating with colleagues to ensure smooth workflow.
- Manage inventory effectively and utilize resources wisely.
- Enhance professional knowledge through ongoing educational opportunities.
- Demonstrate flexibility in taking on additional responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: Minimum of an Associate's degree and registration as a Medical Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent body.
- Licensure: Must meet New York State Department of Health requirements and hold a current Clinical Lab Technician license.
- Experience: Previous laboratory experience is preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
- Capability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and adapt to varying workloads.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform light lifting and carrying, including equipment and supplies, with a maximum weight of up to 30 pounds.
- Frequent use of hands for tasks such as typing and operating equipment, along with prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or walking.
