Position Overview


The ideal candidate will be integral to our flight test team, collaborating with flight test, engineering, and maintenance departments to ensure that flight test aircraft are properly configured for testing.

This role demands a dynamic, execution-oriented approach, working across various disciplines to address engineering challenges through regular engagement with program managers, engineering subject matter experts, manufacturing, flight test, aircraft maintenance, quality assurance, and safety teams.

Key Responsibilities


- Establish and manage the engineering configuration of the aircraft in coordination with flight test planning and the broader engineering team, ensuring clear communication with maintenance and manufacturing resources.

- Oversee the maintenance and modification of the experimental airworthiness certificate, certificate of authorization, and operational limitations.

- Maintain mass properties accounting and define test-specific configurations to meet mass properties objectives for individual flights.

- Contribute to the enhancement of the maintenance and inspection plan, ensuring that engineering insights are integrated into new maintenance procedures, inspection items, or service intervals.

- Support the installation of major alterations sanctioned by engineering and develop minor alterations to the aircraft to facilitate flight testing.

- Utilize advanced engineering knowledge of aircraft components, systems, and testing equipment to ensure necessary engineering actions are taken to optimize aircraft availability and achieve high operational efficiency.

- Stay informed about flight test objectives and schedules to prioritize tasks effectively.

- Serve as the primary liaison between flight test and engineering subject matter experts to resolve issues identified during flight testing, including:

  • Assisting Flight Test Engineers in generating post-flight reports to ensure comprehensive data collection.
  • Prioritizing issues based on severity and timelines to facilitate timely corrective actions.
  • Monitoring engineering ticketing systems to ensure design modifications are implemented on flight test aircraft as needed.

- Maintain aircraft and flight test restrictions based on outstanding issues.

- Act as the main point of contact between flight test and engineering for aircraft modifications and testing configurations, including:

  • Reviewing requests for changes to flight test aircraft to ensure sufficient engineering data and work instructions are provided.
  • Participating in aircraft maintenance planning to incorporate changes, test installations, inspections, and component replacements efficiently.
  • Resolving issues that arise during aircraft maintenance and modifications in collaboration with engineering.

- Assist with maintenance troubleshooting and post-maintenance checks as prescribed by engineering and flight test teams.

- Generate work orders for maintenance tasks and close requests upon completion.

- Ensure accurate documentation of aircraft configuration and status, aligning with the required specifications.

- Contribute to spare parts planning.

Qualifications


- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent experience.

- A minimum of 5 years of experience in flight testing, aircraft development programs, and maintenance operations.

- Proven expertise in technical communication and interpersonal skills.

- Willingness to work flexible shifts, including afternoons, evenings, or overnight rotations.

- Ability to work across multiple sites, including remote locations.

- Demonstrated leadership in managing complex engineering projects.

- Self-motivated to address open-ended technical and scheduling challenges.


At Joby, compensation comprises base salary and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base salary for this position ranges from $95,600 to $208,500 annually, determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
