Role of the Patient Care Technician

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) plays a vital role in assisting patients with end-stage renal disease, working alongside clinical staff throughout the dialysis treatment process to ensure the delivery of prescribed therapies. Our PCTs are essential members of the interdisciplinary team, dedicated to providing safe care and achieving the highest quality outcomes for every patient.

Work Schedule: Full-time, consisting of four 10-hour shifts starting at 5:30 AM; Sundays off; no overnight shifts.

Compensation: Hourly pay ranges from $15 to $22, based on healthcare experience; prior experience is not mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

What to Expect:

  • Engage in infection control, risk management, and patient education activities
  • Assist new patients with a 120-day educational program
  • Measure and document patient vital signs and machine readings during treatments
  • Operate under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN)
  • Prepare and dismantle dialysis blood systems for treatment
  • Insert and remove patient access needles
  • Monitor patients during dialysis, document any changes, and communicate concerns to the charge nurse
  • Calculate patient weight loss to achieve dry weight
  • Prioritize patient care tasks and manage workload effectively
  • Maintain professional relationships while respecting patient privacy and rights
  • Manage and track inventory
  • Conduct laboratory work as needed

Qualifications

Ideal Candidates Will Have:

  • Strong communication skills
  • A collaborative spirit when working with care teams
  • Problem-solving abilities

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Previous healthcare experience is preferred but not essential
  • Skills in CNA, EMT, medical assisting, CNT, and/or phlebotomy are advantageous
  • DCI offers a comprehensive 3-month training program, including classroom instruction and hands-on skills training
  • Dialysis experience is not necessary; job shadowing opportunities are available
