SUMMARY OF ROLE: Reporting directly to the Provost, the Head of Sponsored Research Initiatives is responsible for steering the university's strategic approach to enhancing, promoting, and overseeing research, scholarship, and creative projects involving students, faculty, and staff. This role is pivotal in fostering the establishment and execution of exemplary research programs and in facilitating the submission and administration of research grants in partnership with the Assistant Vice President of Advancement Services and the Business Office. The Head will also coordinate university-wide events to highlight scholarly and creative accomplishments and will manage periodic symposia. Furthermore, this position will ensure alignment of the office's objectives with the strategic goals of the University and gather necessary data for reporting to accreditation bodies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management of Scholarly and Creative Activities (30%)
- Organizes and supports the overall research and scholarship initiatives of the university's faculty, staff, and students.
- Encourages and nurtures both internal and external collaborations to enrich research and scholarly experiences.
- Creates opportunities and promotes student engagement in mentored research experiences through presentations and public showcases.
- Collaborates with Admissions to develop a proactive recruitment strategy that emphasizes on-campus research and scholarly activities.
Grant Oversight (30%)
- In partnership with the Assistant Vice President of Advancement Services, oversees both internal and external academic grant processes, ensuring compliance with reporting standards and assisting with pre- and post-award responsibilities.
- Supports colleagues in crafting competitive grant proposals that align with academic and research priorities.
- Evaluates applications for internal research funding and limited submission opportunities.
- Assists Principal Investigators (PIs) in securing necessary internal approvals and support documentation, ensuring proposals adhere to regulatory guidelines from funding agencies and the university.
- In collaboration with the Vice President for Operations and Chief Financial Officer, manages the allocation of F&A funds, budget formulation, and post-award reporting and invoicing.
Event Coordination & Academic Recognition (20%)
- Plans, organizes, and executes research symposia and other events to showcase the scholarly and creative contributions of faculty, staff, and students, including the annual Research, Internship, and Arts Experiential Learning (RISE) symposium.
- Supports faculty, staff, and students in enhancing the visibility of their research and scholarly activities through various promotional channels, including publications and participation in professional forums.
- Collaborates with committees to acknowledge scholarly achievements.
- Nominates faculty, staff, students, and alumni for external awards recognizing their scholarly contributions.
Data Management and Reporting (10%)
- Oversees data collection and management related to research and scholarly activities.
- Prepares an annual report detailing research and scholarly accomplishments for presentation to the President and other relevant stakeholders.
- Provides data and narratives for accreditation reports as necessary.
General Responsibilities (10%)
- Participates in monthly staff meetings.
- Stays informed about national, state, and regional funding trends and priorities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in coordinating institutional research efforts; equivalent combinations of education, certification, or training may be considered.
- Proficient in analyzing financial data, records, and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential financial matters with discretion.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Able to engage effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Capable of managing tight deadlines and competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Extensive experience with grant-funded research and creative activities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to develop, implement, and sustain interdisciplinary partnerships across the university.
- Proven track record in managing fiscal resources and personnel effectively.
- Demonstrated capability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with various stakeholders.
SUPERVISION: The Head of Sponsored Research Initiatives will report to the Provost and will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively. The office will be located within the university's administrative facilities.
WORK SCHEDULE: Standard hours are Monday - Thursday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Fridays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Extended or weekend hours may be required to support university activities and events.
