The Tax Division of the Employment Development Department (EDD) is currently seeking to fill one (1) Associate Tax Auditor position within the vibrant Modesto Audit Team, part of the Field Audit and Compliance Division's Fresno Area Audit Office. The entry-level Tax Auditor classification will also be considered for recruitment purposes.

Join one of the largest tax collection agencies in the nation. The EDD is tasked with conducting employment tax audits and investigations of businesses operating within California. Additionally, the EDD provides educational resources to employers through complimentary seminars and outreach initiatives.

As an EDD auditor, your daily responsibilities will include performing in-person audits and collaborating closely with business owners and their representatives. You will review employer records to reconcile payroll taxes, ascertain proper classification of workers as employees or independent contractors, and ensure accurate reporting of payments. Auditors are also responsible for preparing audit reports and discussing findings with the responsible parties of the business. Your role as an auditor is vital in ensuring that workers receive the benefits they are entitled to under the law and in promoting equitable business practices.

This position is based in Modesto, CA and may be eligible for telework in accordance with EDD's telework policy. California Government Code Section 14200 mandates that employees reside in California to telecommute. Employees are required to report to their headquarters office as necessary. Travel expenses to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee.

Note: This position may be assigned to the Bakersfield or Fresno Audit Office.

A DAY IN THE LIFE - PREPARE TO THINK BIG, WORK SMART, AND EXCEL

As a Field Tax Auditor, you will:

Receive comprehensive on-the-job and formal training. Conduct in-person payroll tax audits and investigations for California-based enterprises. Learn, adhere to, and apply the provisions of the California Unemployment Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations, Title 22, California Labor Code, and California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board decisions. Engage with business owners and/or their representatives to gain insights into their operations and internal controls. Interview workers and contractors to discuss their working relationships and determine appropriate classifications. Collect relevant information to accurately classify workers and wages. Review financial records to reconcile reported taxes with employer payroll reports. Prepare detailed audit reports to substantiate audit findings and recommendations. Communicate audit findings to business owners and/or their representatives. Attend meetings and participate in Branch and Division-sponsored training sessions.

Special Requirements

Applicants will be appointed to the Tax Auditor, Employment Development Department classification, and receive a salary of $4,425 - $7,194 per month. To be appointed to this classification candidates must complete the Auditor I exam.
