The Tax Division of the Employment Development Department (EDD) is actively seeking to fill one (1) Associate Tax Auditor position within the vibrant Modesto Audit Team, part of the Field Audit and Compliance Division's Fresno Area Audit Office. We also welcome applications for the entry-level Tax Auditor classification.

Join one of the largest tax collection agencies in the country. The EDD is tasked with performing employment tax audits and investigations for businesses operating within California. Additionally, the EDD educates employers through complimentary seminars and outreach initiatives.

As an EDD auditor, your daily responsibilities will include conducting in-person audits and collaborating closely with business owners and their representatives. You will analyze employer records to reconcile payroll taxes, assess the correct classification of workers as employees or independent contractors, and ensure accurate reporting of payments. Auditors are also responsible for compiling audit reports and discussing findings with the relevant parties from the business. Your role is vital in ensuring that workers receive the benefits they are entitled to under the law and in fostering equitable business practices.

This position is based in Modesto, CA, and may qualify for telework in accordance with EDD's telework policy. Employees must reside in California to be eligible for telecommuting. Reporting to the headquarters office may be required as necessary, and travel expenses to and from the assigned headquarters will be the employee's responsibility.

A Day in the Life - Prepare to Think Big, Work Smart, and Shine Bright

As a Field Tax Auditor, your responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving comprehensive on-the-job and formal training.
  • Conducting in-person payroll tax audits and investigations for California-based businesses.
  • Learning and applying the provisions of the California Unemployment Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations, Title 22, California Labor Code, and decisions from the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.
  • Engaging with business owners and/or their representatives to gain insights into their operations and internal controls.
  • Interviewing workers and contractors to clarify their working relationships and determine proper classifications.
  • Collecting pertinent information to accurately classify workers and wages.
  • Reviewing financial records to reconcile reported taxes with employer payroll submissions.
  • Preparing detailed audit reports to substantiate audit findings and recommendations.
  • Communicating audit results to business owners and/or their representatives.
  • Participating in meetings and attending training sessions sponsored by the Branch and Division.

Special Requirements

For the Tax Auditor role, candidates must complete the required examination to gain eligibility for this position.

Successful candidates will be appointed to the Tax Auditor classification and receive a monthly salary ranging from $4,425 to $7,194. Completion of the Auditor I exam is necessary for appointment to this classification.
