Job Overview

Position Summary: The Peer Support Specialist plays a crucial role in providing essential services to clients within the program. By employing the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH) Harm Reduction Tool, the specialist will assist in identifying and eliminating obstacles that hinder clients from achieving and sustaining stable housing. This role is vital in minimizing emergency interventions by law enforcement and urgent behavioral health services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing the MCCH Harm Reduction Assessment Tool to gain insights into each client's needs and the necessary support to mitigate emergency situations.
  • Delivering peer support to individuals facing challenges related to substance use, mental health, and trauma, particularly those linked to homelessness.
  • Facilitating the development of life skills that empower clients to overcome barriers and stigma associated with seeking assistance.
  • Encouraging clients to recognize the advantages of treatment through compassionate and empathetic engagement.
  • Collaborating with Case Management to enhance awareness of client challenges, addressing concerns proactively to prevent crises.
  • Fostering a safe and supportive environment that respects and honors the dignity of clients, in alignment with trauma-informed care principles.
  • Guiding clients in acquiring the skills necessary for independent living.
  • Ensuring clients have access to essential supplies, including toiletries and laundry necessities.
  • Providing immediate intervention during crises or hostile situations.
  • Offering training and support in daily living skills, such as personal hygiene, nutrition, and social interaction.
  • Connecting clients with community resources and mutual self-help groups.
  • Identifying and addressing barriers to full participation in community services.
  • Actively listening to clients and facilitating conflict resolution.
  • Maintaining professional boundaries while establishing positive working relationships.
  • Documenting and reporting any unusual incidents as per MCCH protocols.
  • Completing required training and attending scheduled staff meetings.
  • Representing MCCH positively within the community, in accordance with the organization's mission.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Identifying and addressing housing barriers.
  • Assessing client needs for Case Management services.
  • Monitoring daily activities and ensuring residents' basic needs are met.
  • Reporting significant observations regarding resident behavior or mental health to the Case Manager.
  • Upholding a professional image of MCCH to clients' families and external organizations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to compose routine reports and documentation.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate various challenges.
  • Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid.
  • Capacity to maintain positive working relationships while respecting professional boundaries.
