Position Summary: The Peer Support Specialist plays a crucial role in providing assistance to program participants by employing the Montgomery County Coalition's Harm Reduction Framework to identify and eliminate obstacles to achieving and sustaining stable housing. This position focuses on engaging with clients who may benefit from additional guidance and support, ultimately aiming to decrease the frequency of emergency interventions by law enforcement and urgent behavioral health services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilizing the Harm Reduction Assessment Framework to gain insights into each client's needs and the necessary support systems to mitigate emergency situations;
- Delivering peer support to individuals grappling with substance use, mental health challenges, and trauma often linked to homelessness;
- Facilitating the development of essential life skills to help clients navigate barriers and stigma associated with seeking assistance;
- Encouraging clients to recognize the advantages of treatment through compassionate and empathetic dialogue based on shared experiences;
- Collaborating with Case Management to enhance awareness of client challenges, addressing concerns proactively to prevent crises;
- Fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere where clients are treated with dignity and respect, adhering to trauma-informed care principles;
- Assisting clients in acquiring the skills necessary for independent living;
- Ensuring clients have access to basic necessities, including hygiene products and household supplies;
- Providing immediate intervention during challenging situations and crises;
- Offering training and guidance on daily living skills, such as personal care, nutrition, laundry, public transport usage, and social interaction;
- Facilitating connections to community resources and mutual support groups (e.g., employment, education, physical activities);
- Identifying and addressing internal and external barriers to full engagement in community services;
- Listening to clients and aiding in conflict resolution;
- Building and maintaining positive professional relationships while upholding boundaries;
- Monitoring client behavior and reporting any significant incidents through appropriate channels;
- Completing required training sessions;
- Participating in mandatory staff meetings;
- Representing the Montgomery County Coalition positively within the community;
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for Specific Programs:
- Addressing housing barriers and assessing needs for Case Management;
- Ensuring daily activities are fulfilled and assisting with residents' basic needs;
- Monitoring and communicating important observations regarding resident behavior or mental health status.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED;
- Certification as a Peer Specialist;
- Basic computer proficiency;
- Ability to compose routine reports and documentation;
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate various concrete variables;
- Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid;
- Capacity to establish and maintain positive working relationships while respecting professional boundaries.
