Job Overview

Position Summary: The Peer Recovery Advocate plays a crucial role in providing supportive services to individuals within the program. By employing the Montgomery County Coalition's Harm Reduction Tool, the Advocate will work to identify and eliminate obstacles that hinder clients from achieving and sustaining stable housing. This position focuses on reducing the frequency of emergency interventions by law enforcement and urgent behavioral health services through effective mentoring and support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing the Harm Reduction Assessment Tool to assess client needs and determine necessary support to minimize emergency interventions;
  • Delivering peer support to individuals facing challenges related to substance use, mental health, and trauma, particularly in the context of homelessness;
  • Facilitating the development of essential life skills to help clients overcome barriers and stigma associated with seeking assistance;
  • Encouraging clients to view treatment positively, fostering discussions grounded in empathy and shared experiences;
  • Collaborating with Case Management to address client challenges proactively, preventing crises;
  • Creating a safe and respectful environment that aligns with trauma-informed care principles;
  • Assisting clients in acquiring the skills necessary for independent living;
  • Ensuring clients have access to basic necessities such as toiletries and other essential supplies;
  • Providing immediate intervention during crises or hostile situations;
  • Offering guidance and modeling daily living skills, including personal hygiene, nutrition, and social interaction;
  • Connecting clients with community resources and mutual support groups to enhance their recovery journey;
  • Identifying and addressing barriers to client participation in community services;
  • Listening actively to clients and facilitating conflict resolution when necessary;
  • Maintaining professional boundaries while fostering positive working relationships;
  • Documenting and reporting any significant incidents to supervisors as required;
  • Completing all necessary training and attending mandatory staff meetings;
  • Representing the Montgomery County Coalition positively within the community.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Identifying and removing housing barriers;
  • Assessing client needs for Case Management support.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist;
  • Basic computer proficiency;
  • Ability to compose routine reports and documentation;
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate various challenges;
  • Knowledge of CPR and basic first aid;
  • Capacity to build and maintain professional relationships while respecting boundaries.
