Key Responsibilities- Patrol and Response: Perform active and regular patrols of all campus areas, providing effective response, investigation, and documentation of routine and emergency calls for service.
- Surveillance and Security: Conduct close and regular surveillance of campus properties, including locking and unlocking buildings according to designated schedules, and enforcing University rules and regulations.
- Community Engagement: Act as a knowledgeable resource to students, staff, and visitors, providing general information and up-to-date information about campus events.
- Documentation and Reporting: Create written reports and other documentation as necessary and appropriate.
- Dispatch and Support: Cross-trained to fill the dispatch function when necessary or assigned.
- Relationship Building: Establish relationships with students, faculty, and staff to foster a sense of trust with the public safety function and its officers.
- Education and Certification: Position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, and valid certification through VA DCJS as a Campus Security Officer, First Aid/CPR/AED certification, and ICS-100 or ability to obtain certification within 180 days of hire.
- Experience and Skills: Prior law enforcement or security experience is preferred, with the ability to provide a high degree of reliability, maintain confidentiality, and work independently as well as part of a team.
- Physical and Working Conditions: Must be able to perform medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
