Surgical Technologist OB Specialist

Surgical Technologists play a vital role in the success of operative procedures. As a member of the surgical team, this position ensures a safe and successful operative procedure. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, this role directly reports to Surgical Services management. The Surgical Technologist will support system-wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. Additionally, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.
Responsibilities:
Assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients. Assembles, organizes, and completes case carts according to doctors' preference lists. Provides appropriate instrumentation, suture, and all supplies as requested and maintains a sterile environment. May assist the surgeon by passing instruments during cases. Counts sponges, needles, blades, and instruments using proper technique and established policy. Assists in maintenance and care of specimens and prepares for laboratory analysis. Handles specimens, implants, dressings, soiled instruments, contaminated materials, and sharps in accordance with established policy and recommended standards of practice. Assists with timely turnover of rooms, including clean up, replacement, and restocking of supplies and equipment. Cares for instruments and equipment. Promotes mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abides by service behavior standards. Performs other duties as assigned. May be required to float to other departments within the scope of competency and qualifications. May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED is required. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval. Graduation from formal, accredited surgical technologist program is required. Registered in the state of practice as a Surgical Technologist is required. For certified positions, NCCT Surgical Technologist certification (TS-C) or NBSTSA certification is required. Preferred qualifications include 1 year of OR scrubbing experience and 1 year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital. Regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts is required. Ability to work nights and/or weekends is required for identified positions. The physical requirements of this position include ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy is required. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc). May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
