Job Summary

The Humboldt County Office of Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team. As a Special Education Teacher, you will be responsible for implementing students' educational plans and providing individual, small group, and whole-class instruction to students with exceptional needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct student assessments, design individualized educational plans, and implement appropriate instructional strategies.
• Provide instruction to students using special techniques, equipment, and materials as specified in the IEP, and direct the work of classroom aides and volunteers as necessary.
• Assist in coordinating instructional-related services provided to students, while maintaining significant responsibility for each student's overall educational program.
• Establish and maintain a classroom atmosphere and environment that responds to and, whenever possible, lessens the impact of students' handicapping conditions.
• Administer various assessment instruments to measure progress, determine placement, and update educational plans.
• Provide instruction in areas such as personal hygiene, social skills, physical development, safety skills, academic skills, and vocational awareness skills, depending on the age group and needs of students.
• Provide information or support services to other programs that might help handicapped students adjust and/or integrate during their periods of transition.
• Confer with professional staff regarding behavior management planning and implement appropriate behavior modification techniques and classroom engineering principles to produce desirable individual student behaviors.
• Select, adapt, construct, check, and maintain instructional equipment and supplies appropriate to the program area, needs of students, and safety concerns.
• Record pupil progress accurately and timely.
• Provide a positive learning environment that stimulates student learning and maintenance of skills.
• Support the policies and programs of the Humboldt County Office of Education and perform assigned duties consistent with school, district, or office policies, regulations, and procedures.
• Maintain professional competency by actively engaging in employer-directed inservice activities and other similar opportunities provided to staff.
• Cooperatively engage in the professional evaluation process with supervisor to ensure ongoing professional growth and competence.
• Effectively communicate with staff, parents, agencies, and community members.
• Attend regular and special staff meetings and actively participate as a member of the educational team.
• Respond effectively to the input from and coordinate tasks with district/school personnel as required by the assignment.

Requirements

• Possess and maintain a valid California Special Education credential to teach individuals with exceptional needs.
• Demonstrate competence in communicating effectively with children and parents, staff members, and representatives of other agencies.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position require standing, sitting, and moving about for sustained periods. The teacher may be required to report to multiple worksites on a given day or during the workweek, communicate effectively in person and via telephone and other electronic media, exercise physical control over students who are acting out, and offer physical assistance to students who might be physically impaired. The teacher must maintain an appropriate personal demeanor during periods of heightened stress created by outside factors not always within the ability of the teacher to control at the time.
