Department: Nutrition Therapy

Reports to: Director of Nutrition Therapy

Classification: Hourly

Position Summary:

The Dietitian evaluates, recommends, and executes nutritional care strategies for both outpatient and inpatient settings. This role includes both telehealth and in-person consultations, with a primary focus on outpatient care. Weekend on-call duties are required on a rotating basis (every 4th weekend).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilizes current research and knowledge to provide optimal nutritional care, adhering to age-appropriate standards and employing validated assessment tools and evidence-based interventions.
  • Implements the Nutrition Care Process (ADIME) in patient care and electronic medical record documentation.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the Nutrition Focused Physical Exam for adult patients, applying findings to comprehensive nutrition assessments and diagnoses.
  • Delivers education to patients and families regarding nutritional therapy, tailoring the approach to individual learning styles and communication preferences.
  • Identifies interactions between food and medications, collaborating with pharmacy and nursing to educate patients.
  • Ensures compliance with state and national standards of nutritional care in daily service delivery.
  • Conducts nutritional risk screenings for inpatients and collaborates with Dietetic Technicians for assessments and interventions.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers to recommend and implement nutritional care strategies, participating in interdisciplinary teams as needed.
  • Fosters positive relationships among staff members.
  • Takes responsibility for personal actions.
  • Records nutritional assessments and progress in the patient's electronic medical record.
  • If in an outpatient setting, communicates assessment and care plans to referring physicians.
  • Engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives related to medical nutrition therapy within the department and hospital.
  • Participates in ongoing educational programs and remains updated on current research in medical nutrition therapy.
  • Involves colleagues and the Nutrition Therapy Director in performance evaluations to identify areas for growth and excellence.
  • Maintains a reliable attendance record and demonstrates punctuality.
  • Operates independently while performing job functions.
  • In collaboration with the Nutrition Therapy Director,
    • Plans and delivers nutrition in-services for department staff,
    • Provides nutrition education to healthcare providers, patients, and support systems,
    • Develops and conducts community nutrition classes as necessary, and
    • Secures nutrition education materials as required,
    • Serves as a mentor to dietetic interns and new hires as directed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in managing time, tasks, and resources effectively.

Required Education, Licensure, Certifications, & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree (graduation before 2024) or Master's degree (graduation 2024 forward) with required dietetic coursework from an ACEND-accredited program or equivalent if completed outside the United States.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Certification as a Dietitian with the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) within 60 days of hire.
  • Washington State Food Handlers permit within 30 days of hire.
  • Must fulfill continued professional education requirements for maintaining registration with the CDR and certification with the Washington DOH.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Human Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field (or equivalent if completed outside the United States).
  • Two years of clinical experience (inpatient or outpatient).
  • One year of outpatient experience.
  • Licensed Dietitian with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to navigate within and outside the office to guide clients to nutrition counseling areas, participate in interdisciplinary rounds, and conduct patient interviews and assessments in hospital settings.
  • Occasional lifting and transporting of supplies and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Frequent reaching and handling to obtain supplies, write reports, and utilize computer and telephone.
  • Constant communication and information exchange for performing nutrition assessments.
  • Ongoing communication for patient/client screening, care, and education.
Environmental Conditions:
  • Work Location: Indoor settings.
  • Minimal risk of injury from equipment such as printers, fax machines, and copiers.
  • Minimal exposure to biohazardous materials.
Travel Requirements:

Occasional travel to other clinics may be necessary.
