Position Overview:

The skilled Registered Nurse operates independently within a clinical environment, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of various situations. This role involves delivering both routine and intricate care while focusing on long-term objectives. The nurse continues to enhance their ability to manage the complexities inherent in clinical nursing. Responsibilities include making suitable assignments and delegating tasks to other healthcare providers to effectively oversee clinical scenarios.

The CHRISTUS Spohn South Labor and Delivery, Antepartum, and Obstetrical Emergency Departments are unified under a collaborative team of professionals trained across all three areas. Our team comprises Registered Nurses, OB Surgical Technicians, Certified Nurse Aides, and Unit Secretaries, all dedicated to providing exceptional care.

With 24-hour CRNA coverage for maternity anesthesia and in-house OB Hospitalists available for patient transfers and emergencies, we handle approximately 220 deliveries monthly. Our capabilities extend to providing care for Non-stress tests, Amniocentesis, Labor Induction, and managing postpartum complications, including hemorrhage and elevated blood pressure. We are recognized as a Texas Ten Step facility for Breastfeeding, ensuring a supportive environment for patients and families.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Exhibit competencies aligned with OneCHRISTUS standards: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Deliver nursing care in accordance with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, utilizing the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation for assigned patients.
  • Address complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families based on their practice level.
  • Administer medications and treatments following established protocols, monitoring for side effects and treatment effectiveness.
  • Document patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided accurately.
  • Assess educational needs and provide guidance to patients, families, and caregivers, identifying relevant issues and resources.

Core Competencies:
  • Utilize critical thinking to evaluate the physical, psychosocial, social, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of patients and families.
  • Communicate findings effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Develop and adapt individualized care plans based on evidence-based practices.
  • Implement patient care and therapeutic procedures, monitoring and documenting treatment progress.
  • Conduct timely reassessments and documentation.

Requirements:
Experience:

A minimum of one year in a related nursing specialty is preferred. Experience in a Perinatal setting or completion of a Perinatal RN Residency is advantageous.

Education:

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. Newly hired experienced RNs must complete New Nurses Orientation within the first month of employment.

Licenses/Certifications:

Current RN License in the state of employment or compact. BLS certification is required. Current certification from NCC in Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) or completion of AWHONN courses is necessary within specified timeframes for new hires.
