POSITION SUMMARY

Under the clinical supervision of the Director of Nursing, the incumbent is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The role also involves directing and guiding patient education activities and supporting ancillary personnel while upholding professional nursing standards. The use of electronic medical records is integral to the responsibilities.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conducts assessments of physical, psychological, and psychosocial aspects of patients within the healthcare unit and, as needed, in housing units.
  • Utilizes knowledge of medical conditions to gather health histories and perform assessments.
  • Provides leadership to nursing staff in relation to medical care.
  • Monitors medication administration for offenders and maintains accurate records.
  • Employs effective communication skills to gather relevant patient information and make necessary referrals.
  • Delivers nursing services competently and in accordance with established standards and protocols.
  • Facilitates timely referrals to appropriate healthcare providers based on assessments and diagnostic results.
  • Coordinates with physicians for medication orders to ensure continuity of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacology, including drug interactions and side effects.
  • Administers medications safely and efficiently, adhering to prescribed orders and standards.
  • Participates in training for facility personnel on mental health protocols.
  • Adheres to facility policies and procedures.
  • Operates within the guidelines of the State Nurse Practice Act and ethical standards.
  • Communicates effectively with other healthcare staff and correctional personnel.
  • Respects patient confidentiality and dignity.
  • Proposes improvements for workplace conditions to management.

Upon receiving the necessary training, performs additional related duties as assigned.


JOB REQUIREMENTS
The following qualifications are the minimum requirements for this position. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

LICENSURE:
Current, unrestricted Texas Registered Nurse License

CERTIFICATION:
Current CPR Certification

EDUCATION:
Graduate from an accredited nursing program. An Associate's Degree is required; a Bachelor's Degree is preferred.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
At least one (1) year of clinical experience; experience in correctional nursing is advantageous.
