Overview:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for delivering expert nursing care to ensure the comfort and health of patients. The CNS prepares necessary equipment and supports physicians during examinations and medical procedures. This role involves administering prescribed medications, changing dressings, cleaning wounds, and monitoring vital signs of patients. The Clinical Nurse Specialist meticulously observes and documents patient care, conditions, reactions, and progress.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist plays a vital role as the primary nurse, associate nurse, team member, or team leader in the planning and execution of patient care strategies. The CNS directs and aids in the implementation of safe aseptic techniques and procedures. Additionally, the Clinical Nurse Specialist provides leadership and guidance to all support personnel within the department.

The Trauma Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a specialized 27-bed intermediate care unit focusing on neurological, thoracic, abdominal, and orthopedic trauma patients. This unit also serves as the designated overflow unit for stroke patients. As a PCU, registered nurses are required to hold certifications in BLS, ACLS, TNCC, and NIHSS, along with multiple advanced competencies, including the administration of anti-arrhythmic medications, management of non-invasive respiratory support, and conducting serial neurological assessments.

Our staffing model features a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-5, adjusted according to patient acuity. Working in this dynamic environment, you will collaborate with a dedicated, diverse team of physicians, advanced practitioners, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, therapists, respiratory therapists, and ancillary staff. Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program with the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care.
  • Preferred one year of nursing experience.
  • Possession of a current Texas State RN License.
  • CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
  • ACLS certification required within six months of hire or transfer.
  • EKG certification required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • TNCC certification required within 18 months of hire or transfer.
