Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Comptroller/CFO, the Director of General Ledger Accounting oversees and directs the activities of the general ledger accounting team, which involves complex and extensive responsibilities, particularly in the areas of general ledger management and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises accounting personnel, establishing priorities and timelines; reviews financial documents, reconciliations, and calculations; provides training and support to team members.
  • Coordinates the preparation of journal entries; conducts bank reconciliations, cash transfers, and reconciles general ledger accounts.
  • Facilitates informed financial decisions by developing, monitoring, and enforcing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and approves journal entries, balance sheets, and various accounting reports; investigates and resolves discrepancies in funds and inter-fund adjustments.
  • Safeguards assets by implementing and maintaining robust internal controls.
  • Manages entries related to bond transactions, including purchases, amortization, and capital expenditures.
  • Monitors financial health by conducting audits and providing necessary information to external auditors.
  • Achieves financial objectives by managing expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective measures.
  • Reports on financial status by gathering, interpreting, and presenting financial data.
  • Prepares specialized reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing financial trends and information.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by reviewing existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence, and advising management on necessary actions.
  • Prepares all required monthly, quarterly, year-end, and special financial statements.
  • Responsible for the setup and transfer of budget accounts, maintenance of the general ledger, and chart of accounts.
  • Maintains accurate records of revenues and expenditures, ensuring budgets reflect current activities.
  • Prepares and reviews journal entries and reconciliations of accounts.
  • Assists in the preparation and analysis of monthly reports for the governing board.
  • Establishes and follows regular procedures for analyzing general ledger balance sheets, including cash and inventory accounts.
  • Prepares and reconciles monthly trial balances for each accounting fund.
  • Ensures that subsidiary ledger balances align with control account balances in the general ledger.
  • Prepares internal and external reports as required.
  • Participates in committees as appointed by the President.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding sensitive information encountered during the course of work.
  • Contributes to a safe and productive work environment by participating in safety drills and training.
  • Regular on-site attendance is required due to the collaborative nature of the role.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required; CPA or Master's degree is a plus.
  • Relevant accounting experience is preferred, ideally within higher education.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated initiative and analytical skills are essential.
  • Proficient in automated financial systems and related software.

Work Environment

  • Primarily works in a climate-controlled office setting with minimal exposure to safety hazards.
  • Requires physical capability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds and engage in various physical activities.

Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Subject to a criminal background check prior to employment.
