Freeman Mathis & Gary is a national, specialty litigation firm with various office locations throughout the U.S. We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Counsel to join our Conflicts team at any of our office locations.

About the Role:

The Staff Counsel will be a member of the Conflicts and Intake Team, responsible for conducting internal conflict research on all potential and new cases. They will work closely with partners to ensure any conflicts are cleared or waived. The Staff Counsel will also draft and review waivers for new matters and assist with vetting conflicts related to lateral hires.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct internal conflicts research on potential new cases
  • Review and resolve any conflicts, including drafting waivers and resolving actual or potential conflicts
  • Communicate with attorneys, clients, and assistants regarding matter opening process and ethical rules
  • Prepare and review attorney-client engagement letters for accuracy
  • Open new clients and affiliated matters in firm software system
  • Closing and preparing final closing documents of requested matters
  • Enter and update all matter-related information and firm contacts
  • Run conflicts related to lateral hires joining the firm
  • Assist with offboarding of attorneys and reassignment of matters
Requirements:
  • Understanding of legal conflicts and applicable ethics rules
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information
  • Legal degree and professional license required
  • Three or more years of experience in legal or insurance field preferred
